Below is a brief description highlighting one of thousands of projects provided by the companies of McGhie & Betts.
North Star Foods
St. Charles , MN
North Star Foods was the largest employer in St. Charles, Minnesota until fire destroyed the meat processing facility in April of 2009. Prior to the fire, the plant processed in excess of one million pounds of meat a week and generated large volumes of waste water and meat processing waste solids subject to City and State permits. McGhie & Betts handled all the waste water permits and land spreading of the meat solids.

The fire completely destroyed the plant during normal weekly operations resulting in the total loss of the plant, equipment and an inventory of 2 million pounds of fresh and frozen meat. Fortunately there were only minor injuries, however, ammonia releases required the evacuation of 2,500 people for St. Charles and caused a fish kill in the South Branch of the Whitewater River.

McGhie & Betts served as the owners’ representative and Project Manager for health, safety and waste disposal during the 6 week long fire investigation and during the four month long demolition. Work continued to clean-up the site after the decision was made not to re-build.
